Naturally dyed by artisans in Bagru, India
The "syahi" black color is obtained from a mixture of horse-shoe iron, jaggery and water. The fabric is soaked in a natural mordant known as "harda" derived from the myrobalan nut. When the mordanted fabric is soaked in the syahi mixture, the fabric turns a deep shade of black.
Indigo is one of the most commonly used natural dyes in Asia. Leaves are harvested from the indigo plant, fermented, and added to a dye vat which can be up to 7 meters deep. Due to the indigo's natural tannic properties there is no mordanting required and the fabric can be dipped directly into the vat. Each dip into the vat gives the fabric a deeper shade of blue.
